Our Community / Language

Language

The main language spoken in this community is yolngu matha (aboriginal language), which comes in many different dialects, one being Dhuwala, the language of the traditional landowners, being the Gumatj clan group. The other dialects spoken within our community are Dhangu, Dhuwal and Dhayi.

There are people living here who come from about 12 different clan groups within the Miwatj region. Although, each clan group speaks in their own dialect, everyone understands each other very clearly.
